When you talk to Jestin Gilmore and listen to him reflect on a 5-year journey as a Chattanooga Mocs athlete, one can’t help but marvel at the growth and resilience he’s experienced along the way.
From his early days as a high school recruit to the challenges of injuries and competing for playing time, this journey has been anything but ordinary. Yet, through it all, he maintained a steadfast commitment to positivity and determination, thanks in large part to the lessons instilled by his mother.
Here is his story. It’s one that starts with keeping a positive attitude.
My mom has always been a guiding light in my life, teaching me the importance of maintaining a positive attitude, no matter the circumstances.
She would always tell me, “No matter what’s going on in your life, whether you’re getting your way or not, always keep a positive attitude because it’ll take you a long way.”
These words resonated with me deeply, and as I faced the ups and downs of my athletic journey, I understood the wisdom behind them. Even in the toughest times, I’ve strived to keep a smile on my face, lift up my teammates and radiate positivity.
My mom’s guidance has been my anchor, reminding me that a positive attitude can make all the difference.

Embracing Opportunities & Buying into the Culture
While I’ve faced my fair share of challenges, I’ve always been ready to embrace every opportunity that comes my way. The first of those opportunities came on special teams.
When I first joined the Mocs, I had some talented players ahead of me in the rotation, which limited my snaps on defense. However, I was determined to make my mark on the team. Special teams became my platform to showcase my skills and prove my worth.
I approached every special teams play with the mindset of making it count. It was my chance to demonstrate to the coaches and my teammates that I was ready to contribute. This dedication to making the most of every opportunity has been a driving force in my journey.
Being a Moc means more than just playing football; it’s about buying into the culture and embracing the brotherhood.
From day one, I was welcomed into a team that valued camaraderie and accountability. We hold each other to high standards, push each other to be better and celebrate each other’s successes.
It’s not about individual achievements; it’s about collective growth and support. I’ve seen this culture firsthand, and it’s what keeps me motivated every day. It’s led me into this, year five, and the opportunity to have a bigger role in the defense.

A Pivotal Moment
One of the standout moments in my journey was during our game against Wofford, where I had 1.5 sacks. The strip sack, in particular, was a game-changing play. We were up 14-7, and they had just scored a touchdown to answer our first one and our offense had tacked another one on the board. It was still very much a game.
I managed to get to the quarterback and force a fumble, which Isaiah Harvey recovered. It was a pivotal moment that shifted the momentum in our favor. The offense took advantage of the short field for the touchdown. On the next Wofford snap, Jaden Nelson had his pick-6 and suddenly it’s 28-7.
Moments like these are what I live for. It’s the culmination of years of hard work, perseverance and dedication.
Being part of a team that can capitalize on those moments and turn them into victories is incredibly fulfilling.

Fuel for the Journey
While that game was a significant milestone, it’s far from the endpoint of my journey. I see it as a starting point, a reminder of what I’m capable of and what lies ahead. It’s moments like these that are fuel to keep pushing forward, to continue growing and to leave my mark on this program.
As a fifth-year senior, I’ve learned countless lessons along the way. If I could go back and give advice to my freshman self, I’d tell him to stay focused and keep grinding, no matter the obstacles.
College football is a journey filled with ups and downs, but staying committed and embracing the challenges is what sets you apart. As I continue this journey as a Moc, I carry with me the lessons from my mom, the opportunities I’ve embraced, the culture I’ve bought into and the moments that have shaped me.
It’s a journey that’s far from over, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next.
